I’m Alive…

 …but I hurt all over.  I’ll work on some posts today while traveling to Lima.  


Inca Trail total step count:  101,351 over four days.  Now, this may not make sense because a meter is a meter, but I can assure you that some meters are much longer than others.

After 15+ years of teaching full-time at three different colleges, this year I had my first opportunity to take a much-needed sabbatical.  The sabbatical, a fantastic perk in academia, typically consists of a semester off from the regular duties of teaching, advising, and answering emails (at least, a break from answering emails daily ) to give one time and space to work on their research.  At small colleges like mine, how one spends their time on sabbatical is relatively flexible; while some work on research, publish articles, or write a book, I elected to spend this semester re-working and updating two courses I teach regularly that I felt had become a bit dated and stale.  Additionally, I still had some funding available from when I started that was never used.  While people normally spend those funds on conference travel or equipment to aid their research, I was able to talk my boss into letting me use the balance of these funds to finance what I’m calling a “sco...

Preparing to Hike the Inca Trail

Once I decided on Peru as the destination, I started doing some additional research on how I want to spend my time there.  I’ll save the details for later when I actually have something more interesting to add, but my itinerary basically looks like this: 5/7                              Depart Cedar Rapids and arrive in Lima, Peru 5/8 - 5/12                  Spend five days in the Sacred Valley region using   Ollantaytambo as a home base 5/13 - 5/15               Spend a few days in Cusco to acclimate to the elevation (~11,000 ft) 5/16 - 5/19              Four-day hike on the Inca Trail (Camino Inca) ending at Machu Picchu 5/20 - 5/22              Spend a few days exploring Lima As much as I wish I could do more (e.g., Arequip...

“Final destination, Bogota?”

Cedar Rapids - Atlanta - Bogota, Columbia - Lima, Peru My alarm went off at 3:25am this morning, so I started a long travel day with about four hours of sleep.     Not ideal, but it’s enough to get by.     After Jennifer dropped me off   at the airport, I ran into the day’s first obstacle when I tried to check in.  Apparently, the flight I booked from Bogota to Lima doesn’t fly today!     Why did they sell me a ticket for a non-existent flight?     No one knows, but they hurriedly booked me on a similar flight so it all worked out.     It’s really great to fly out of Cedar Rapids because it’s so small and easy to navigate!     The gate agent told me I would need to check in again in Bogota for the Lima flight.     Will by checked bag go through to Lima, or do I need to pick it up in Bogota and go through Customs with it?     🤷🏼‍♀️ was her exact response.  Cool, cool.  I guess I’ll just ...
